Beefing Up My Shelves – Mar. 21, 2011!

I have heard so much about Ali Smith but never read her. I am happy to have pounced on one her many books written. I think a brief biography on her would be important here:

Ali Smith (born in 1962 in Inverness) is a British writer. She was born to working  – class parents, raised in a council house in Inverness and now lives in Cambridge. She studied at the University of Aberdeen, and then at Cambridge, for a PhD that was never finished. She worked as a lecturer at University of Strthclyde until she fell ill with Chronic fatigue syndrome. Following this she became a full-writer and now writes for The Guardian, The Scotsman, and the Times literary Supplement. Openly gay, she lives in Cambridge with her partner Sarah Wood. About the book: the Accidental

The blurb on the back cover says: ‘A novel about the ways that seemingly chance encounters irrevocably transform our understanding of ourselves, The Accidental explores the nature of truth, the role of fate and the power of storytelling’.

The Accidental won the Whitbread Novel Award in 2005. It was also shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize the same year. The Observer has said of the book as ‘Delicious, funny, sexy, poignant, bewitching’

In fact, I am eager to get into my system the contents of this very book.

Have you ever heard of this book? Have you read this book? Do you know anything about the author? Let me hear from you via comments!

I also have heard really good things about Ali Smith, and just came across one of her books on my shelf that I have been neglecting. It’s called Hotel World, and it’s supposed to be very good. I also have read good reviews of The Accidental, and think that you will really like it. It was a good choice for your shelves, and I hope you enjoy it. I will be looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it, and who knows, it may inspire me a little more to try Smith sooner!

Of course, Hotel World seems to be one of her popular books. I hope I do like the Accidental, anyway. You may want to look out for my thoughts soon. Thanks.

I have been dying to read this book, it shows up in my radar again and again, and I really have to read it one day. I read her “Boy meets girl” as part of the Canongate myth series and I like it. She is a good writer and I hope you enjoy it, she’s brilliant.
