Maya Angelou born Marguerite Ann Johnson; April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) was an American author and poet. She died Wednesday morning at her home in Winston-Salem, N.C., at the age of 86.
Ms. Angelou published 36 books in her lifetime, including seven autobiographies, volumes of poetry, essay collections, cookbooks and children’s books. She rose to fame in 1969 with the publication of her landmark book, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” which explores her childhood and teenage years and delves into her struggles with rape, racial identity and sexism.
